Requests for Event and Program Support from the Tree-Ring Society

The Tree-Ring Society (TRS) is committed to supporting activities that advance our mission through field schools, workshops, conferences, and other educational or professional events. TRS’s mission is to promote and encourage research in dendrochronology throughout the world; to arrange symposia and conferences on dendrochronology at meetings of other scientific disciplines; to publish the results of research in dendrochronology; to sponsor and promote the application of dendrochronology to related fields, and in general, to disseminate knowledge of dendrochronology to other scientists and the public at large.

In the past, TRS has provided funding for events such as the Dendrochronology Field School (formerly NADEF), the African Dendrochronological Fieldschool, WorldDendro, and AmeriDendro. To increase transparency we have developed a process that is equitable and consistent.

We invite eligible organizations to submit requests for consideration using the standardized request form linked at the bottom of this page. Eligible organizations include any organization that supports tree-ring research or education.

What We Support

We provide limited financial support to organizations hosting events that align with our mission, including but not limited to:

  • Field schools, workshops, and training programs
  • Conferences and symposia
  • Community-based or collaborative educational events
  • Other organized activities that demonstrate broad benefit to participants and/or the field

Support is intended to enhance access, training, and participation at an organizational or programmatic level.

Funding Amounts

Dependent on the type of event and demonstrated needs, typical funding varies from $2,500 for small events such as field schools up to $5,000 for larger events such as conferences.

Funding Priorities

While all eligible requests are considered, priority may be given to proposals that:

  • Demonstrate clear alignment with our mission and values
  • Demonstrably promote equity, inclusion, and access
  • Clearly support early-career scholars, students, or underrepresented groups through organizational programming
  • Clearly articulate how funds will be used and the broader impact of the event

Funding decisions are made based on available resources in a given year and may fluctuate from year to year.

Application Deadlines

To accommodate organizations planning events on different academic and seasonal schedules, there are two application deadlines per year:

  • March Equinox: March 20th
  • September Equinox: September 22nd

Requests submitted by each deadline will be reviewed together. Applications will be reviewed by a funding subcommittee of the TRS Executive Council, with final approval by the council as a whole.

Reporting and Acknowledgement

Organizations that receive support must:

  • Provide a brief post-event summary describing how funds were used
  • Acknowledge our organization’s support in event materials, where appropriate

Details will be communicated at the time of award.

How to Apply

All requests must be submitted through our standardized request form:
